Who is it for?

This course is for...

Members of the workforce who work predominantly with children, young people and/or their parents/carers and who could potentially contribute to assessing, planning, intervening and reviewing the needs of a child and parenting capacity where there are safeguarding concerns.

For example, paediatricians, GPs, youth workers, YOT staff and staff in secure settings, those working in the early years sector, residential staff, midwives, school nurses, health visitors, sexual health staff, teachers, probation staff, sports club welfare officers, those working with adults in, for example, learning disability, mental health, alcohol and drug misuse services, those working in community play schemes.

What does it cover?

This course covers...

  • Definitions of forced and arranged marriage, and the definition of honour based violence. The legal framework including the provisions afforded by the Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Act and learning from national and or local SCRs and audits as appropriate.
  • Identification of the historical and cultural roots of honour based violence.
  • Impact of forced marriage and honour related abuse.
  • Thresholds, assessment and appropriate referrals in context of multi-agency working.

What are the course outcomes?

Participants will be able to...

  • Understand their role in respect of identifying concerns about children
  • Be able to discuss concerns with the relevant person within their organisation.
  • Be aware of factors that impact on the vulnerability of children in the context of honour based violence as an individual, social and parental factors.
  • Understand the need to fully assess family history and functioning in the context of honour based violence and forced marriage.
